Lately, I have been impressed upon by the Holy Spirit as to just how selfish I have been with my life. God has been so good to me, but so often I opted for a convenient Savior. I wanted God to take care of me, bless me, and at times fill my cup--but only at my own discretion. Like I knew better than Almighty God what I needed. Can't we be proud?
Sometimes, an analogy really speaks to me, or helps me understand a point better. That being said, so often I have wanted the Lord to be like a spigot. When I was ready for Him to fill me and, let's face it, perform for me, I would turn Him on. When I had had enough, I would turn Him off again. What could be further from the will of God?
When Christ ministered to the Samaritan woman at the well, did He tell her he could give her a spigot, and that she could adjust the blessings and the provisions as she needed? No! Instead, He told her "But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life." (John 4:14) Jesus Christ, the son of God, longs to give us His living water, which will flow from us with an unstoppable abundance. If we seek Him and receive this living water from Him, we won't be able to dam it up or contain it.
In a desert land, or at least a land not nearly as well-watered as Southern Kentucky, wells are a hot commodity. One of the first things a conquering country would do to bring a people to its knees was to stop up their wells (see Gen 26:15, 2 Kings 3:25). Water can be hard to come by. It is necessary to sustain life, but sometimes it's in short supply. Or sometimes it's not pure enough to consume.
In Jeremiah 17:13, God is referred to as "the Lord, the fountain of living waters." How much more should we treasure the living water that the Lord will provide than physical water. Once we have received, we will be like a spring that cannot be stopped, cannot be dammed, cannot be abated. Praise be to God that the living water He provides need never be in short supply if we follow Him faithfully with our whole hearts. Thank Him that His water is always clean, pure, and satisfying!
May the hearts of God's people be so overflowing with His living water that this world would be drowned in the righteous mercy of Christ!
